Anyone born between 1981 and 1996 is considered a millennial by Pew Research Center. Nurses in this group make up a large population of traveling nurses. Each generation of people has different ways of doing things. Millennials are different from the generation before them and are different than Generation Z who is following. Researchers find those in this age group enjoy trying new food, staying in touch with their friends over digital communication and value experiences over material things.
Although these are generalities, it is important you identify the factors which will make a difference in how much you enjoy your next assignment. Many millennials have expressed the desire to work in places where they can grow their nursing experience and, therefore, their careers. Houston, Texas, offers one of the top cancer hospitals in the country, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Cleveland, Ohio, offers three prestigious hospitals, including the Cleveland Clinic that’s been rated the second-best hospital in the country. Rochester, Minnesota, offers Mayo Clinic, which has been ranked as the top hospital for the past two years, and while not in a large city, it borders on three states, which means your days off may offer several adventures.
If you’re looking for stunning natural beauty, then Alaska might just be what you need. Anchorage is home to Alaska’s largest hospital with growing healthcare industry and great pay. If you like outdoor activities like boating, fishing, and camping, then Anchorage may offer the best of both worlds to you. Austin, Texas, is a fast-growing city with a high density of healthcare facilities in need of nurses. It’s also a hub for live music, entertainment, and great food. If you’re looking for some of the highest nursing salaries in the country, head to Burbank, California, home to television and film studios like NBC and Disney. Burbank is at the heart of the entertainment industry and a lucrative assignment for travel nurses.
If living on the coast sounds like heaven to you, consider San Francisco. Although it has one of the highest costs of living, as a travel nurse, you won’t be there long term and it offers several diverse cultural events, higher-than-average salaries and a beautiful landscape. The other side of that coin is Tucson, Arizona, which offers several opportunities in the medical field and a lower cost of living. They have a well-known, live music offering and a large population of university students and retirees which makes it a unique career opportunity. If you’re looking for a mix of culture, museums, and beaches, consider Chicago, Illinois. This is the third-largest city in the U.S. and certainly one of the best cities to grow your nursing career and experience. Despite a dense population, they have over 570 parks and a number of professional sports teams.
If you’ve just been to the big city and are looking for a small-town feel with lots of energy, consider Charleston, South Carolina. The city has nearly 1 million people, but they’ve managed to maintain their small-town charm even as they’ve grown. The medical community is growing in the neighboring city of Mount Pleasant, and Charleston is well known for loving food and fun with an endless local flair and some of the best southern boutiques. Before you laugh, we’ve included Des Moines, Iowa, because it’s one of the top cities for young professionals. You may not have imagined, but Des Moines has a thriving downtown, with good food, art and music festivals. Seattle, Washington gets a vote as it’s considered to have some of the best summer weather with less annual rain than Miami, Florida. Seattle has a low unemployment rate, thriving healthcare, and a low crime rate.
Each of these destinations offers a unique opportunity for travel nurses to grow their careers or enjoy new experiences. The assignment you choose should be based on your desires. However, it’s important to remember not every assignment needs to meet all your goals. In other words, if you’ve started travel nursing to grow your experiences and expand your career, you may want to take at least one assignment where your goal is to just enjoy your surroundings.
